about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

This is it! The final tour diary from the lovely and amazing 3OH!3. And babies, let me tell you, it sure does deliver. This time around, Nat and Sean are checking in from Panama City Beach, Florida, where they were a major factor in the insanity that is MTV Spring Break 2009. Dive right in (they did!) to your last weekend of 3OH!3, in which they stay up all night, declare their love for men, toss their cookies, and crash their Jet Skis. Must be Spring Break!

PANAMA CITY BEACH your lovely shores are stocked full of hot bodies and no reservations. We were just in Cancun and it was pretty g*ddamn epic, so we were trying to top it here.

We met up with our boy Benny Blanco at the airport in Atlanta on the way -- he came down from NYC to hang out and DJ for us. If you don't know, Benny is the illest beatmaker and producer in the world right now. His s**t is insane. He's done Britney, Spank Rock, B.o.B. and I co-produced "Don't Trust Me" with him. We are in love with him. He's in love with us. It's one of those things. Don't judge.

We got into the hotel and worked on the set until we couldn't keep our eyes open any more.

Wake-up call. We went to the beach to record a bunch of interviews for the different MTV networks. We said some dumb s**t probably, maybe some smart s**t intermingled in there. Probably mostly dumb s**t. Over to the beach to check out the stage and soundcheck. It was a rad setup -- mad people already and they were going off for our sound check. I threw cookies out to the crowd for some reason. People seemed stoked.

We started the show and s**t went OFF!!! There were something like 6-7,000 people on a BEACH... in FLORIDA... under the SUN... with all sorts of cameras and loud speakers. It was so much fun out there. We went crowd-surfing with our little pink and blue inner-tubes. Benny killed the set.

We got done and went straight to renting Jet Skis. Good idea. We crashed going like 45.

MTV SPRING BREAK ---  I love spring break now. So much. Man, that was a fun day...

+ See it all for yourself, tonight at 8pm ET, on FN Spring Break Rules!

I had a conversation recently with one of the bands who played MTV Spring Break 2009 -- probably better not to tell you which one -- and among the glory stories, was one of waking up on the beach between two beautiful women, both of whom were rubbing his head affectionately. If that's what the morning is like at Spring Break, can you imagine the night?!? Well, you won't have to imagine anything much longer. Tonight FNMTV returns to take you directly to the thick of this year's Spring Break at its baddest!

I can't promise that you'll get your head rubbed. That's up to you. But I can absolutely guarantee that you'll be throwin' elbows and your head back as the crowd gets down to live performances by...

Lil Wayne

Asher Roth

Jim Jones

Kid Cudi

N.E.R.D featuring Santigold

Flo Rida

All-American Rejects

3OH!3

You'd have a hard time coming up with a lineup that good on the bestseller rack at a record store. But then, I guess you'd also have a hard time finding a record store! OH SNAP! But who needs one when all the hottest action on earth is cookin' out in that Panama City Beach sunshine, just waiting for you to join in?

Keep an eye on Buzzworthy next week for more tastes of what's to come, including exclusive reports from Lil Wayne, Young Money, Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Jim Jones, and 3OH!3. Then tune in tonight at 8pm ET to see what it's all been building up to! And just because I know you're a glutton for instant gratification, here's Jim Jones doing "Na Na Nana Na Na," live from Panama City Beach!

secondhand serenade
Our good buddy John Vesely, aka Secondhand Serenade, doesn't quite strike us as the high school theater type. Don't you get more of a "used-Jetta, Salinger-reading, earnest boyfriend" vibe? Well, regardless, his new video, "Your Call," is beyond theatrical. It starts off with a velvet curtain opening on an empty, spotlit stage. From there, Vesely's mini-melodrama just builds and builds and builds -- a set materializes, angelic women sway -- until it explodes into an eyes-closed chorus of "I WAS BORRRN! TO TELL YOU I LOVE YOUUU!" Beats the heck out of any boring play we ever saw.

"Your Call," the second single off Secondhand Serenade's February release, A Twist In My Story, had a deservedly epic debut on the FNMTV holiday special this past Friday. Needless to say, girls cried. Speaking of which, since you're here and teary-eyed already, you may as well also check out the video for Twist's first single, "Fall For You." Sorry in advance about your sore heartstrings.

You may not have picked up on the Lost Boys theme of Metro Station's brand-new video, "Seventeen Forever," which premiered this past Friday night on FNMTV, but you most certainly zeroed in on those cameos by Billy Ray -- he played a carnie of sorts -- and Miley Cyrus, who played a bad driver and also premiered her own "Fly On the Wall" video that night.

But back to Metro Station. They shot "Seventeen Forever" at the Blue Cloud Movie Ranch in Canyon Saugus, Cali (dude, they filmed Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers there!) under director Josh Forbes, who returned for another Metro Station video -- he also directed "Shake It" and "Control" as well as Boys Like Girls' "Thunder" video, and Sara Bareilles' mechanically inclined "Love Song" video.

Check out Mason's Morrissey hair and a carnival-themed dedication to eternal youth that's far less cloying than that last scene in Grease.

Let's get right down to it: The FNMTV holiday extravaganza is the music world equivalent of a two-hour special where the cast of Gossip Girl flies to Australia with the cast of Twilight only to crash halfway on Lost. It's like if George Clooney came back to ER and he was engaged to Brad Pitt AND Angelina. And they adopted more kids. Last but not least, it's like Michael Jackson's Off The Wall, in the sense that it's off the wall.

Host/ new dad Pete Wentz does double-duty tonight, introducing blockbuster video premieres AND performing with Fall Out Boy. THAT FALL OUT BOY. And when he's not talking, Travis McCoy will be filling the gaps with a little ee-err ee-err as the house DJ!

Finally, if you don't mind having your head explode, try thinking about the fact that we also have brand-new videos from Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. AND even her brother Trace AND Metro Station! Pop.

Tonight's FNMTV Video Premieres:
Britney (kind of a big deal) Spears - "Circus"
Miley (maybe you've heard of her?) Cyrus - "Fly On The Wall"
The Game featuring Ne-Yo - "Camera Phone"
Metro Station - "Seventeen Forever"
Secondhand Serenade - "Your Call"

DO NOT NOT WATCH FNMTV. THIS IS THE EPISODE OF THE CENTURY (until the next one...).

Tonight. 8pm ET. MTV. Go.

You've probably watched it so many times now that your brain's starting to feed on itself, but just in case you haven't reached that point yet, see Tokio Hotel's big VMA night from start to finish -- from their big red carpet arrival to their big win -- through "ihre augen." (My German sucks if you couldn't tell. What's German for "suck," by the way?) Plus, it looks even better on the MTV player, nein?

Plus:
+ Watch Tokio Hotel on FNMTV
+ TH meet the Pussycat Dolls
+ Bill on the VMA red carpet
+ See the guys prep for their monster truck entrance to the VMAs!

The news is true. After 10 long, strong years of deafening screaming, live performances, walk-ons, and music videos (VIDEOS!) and celebrities that went on to become pop culture phenomenons (and a few who didn't), the bright lights of TRL -- lights that once lit up the careers of Britney Spears (she appeared on the show 21 times), Mariah Carey (if you don't remember when she busted onto the show in 2001 and stripped, then refresh your memory with the video below), *NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Nelly, Diddy, Eminem, Backstreet Boys, Pink, and thousands of other genre-spanning artists who took the stage between 1998 and 2008 -- will go dark. Worst.

The show, originally hosted by Carson Daly, currently co-hosted by Damien Fahey and Lyndsey Rodrigues, will end in November 2008 after a final farewell show and lots of tears.

And not that anything could ever take the place of TRL, and true, maybe we should wait for the blood to dry, but here's some good news to complement the sad stuff -- due to popular demand, FNMTV will be returning to your otherwise crappy Friday nights starting this November. BRAND-new videos! Played in their entirety! The way God intended! And celebrities! Live performances! LOLs! Arguing! More screaming!

Pour some milk out for your favorite fallen show and raise a glass of Quik to the second coming of FNMTV. And below, see who was on the very first TRL countdown ever on September 14, 1998. Plus, check out thousands of TRL photos (including snaps from the iconic backstage photo booth) then close your eyes and let the sentimental sounds of Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, and Diddy (Puffy, hold me down, baby!) help you pay your respects to a decade of MTV's Total Request Live.

Close your eyes and mentally picture a bendy, paper doll version of singer/actress Zooey Deschanel. (Or, better, yet, just check out the image above).

Got it? Rightyho! Now grab your Zooey doll, douse her with liquid eyeliner, remove her bizarro tambourine and replace her peachy-colored lip gloss with a rosy red lipstick. Next, liberally bedazzle her bust region, brush her bangs out of her face (and swap that weird, rose-shaped scrunchie for a giant, glittery butterfly barrette) then tilt her head forward until she's staring directly at you, wondering WTF is going on. Then pat yourself on the back: you're just officially recreated Katy Perry's vamped-out disco queen look from the 2008 VMAs.

Granted, Katy and Zooey have always had that dark-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned lady of leisure thing going on, but it wasn't 'til Katy winked at us in her costume-y, Xanadu-inspired two-piece last Sunday that we came to an important realization: Katy and Zooey MAY ACTUALLY BE THE SAME PERSON.

+ Think about it: When was the last time you actually saw them in the same room together, at the exact same time? (Answer: Never). Check out this pic of Katy from the VMAs, compare them with this snapshot of Zooey from FNMTV -- Katy and Zooey's band She & Him were on the same episode of FNMTV, which was really confusing -- and watch their videos below. Then admit that they're either (a) identical twins, or else (b) aliens from some faraway planet where no one uses self-tanner -- and EVERYONE can sing.

If someone offered you $500 to possibly kill (or at least blind) yourself and permanently damage your internal organs, would you do it?

What about if you were really bored, and that someone was Pete Wentz?

Well, I know my answer: yes. This is because, yesterday, while we were taking a break from shooting the special VMA-edition of FNMTV (airing this Friday! 8 p.m.! Special appearances by Tokio Hotel and T.I.! WOOOO!), Wentz bet me $500 to eat a gigantic, gumball-sized ball of wasabi -- then wash it down with 32 fluid ounces of really nasty Kombucha , a fermented drink that tasted a whole lot like malted vinegar. And I took him up on his wager.

So I downed the wasabi (shooter style, like an oyster), and chugged the Kombucha. It felt like I had just swallowed a smoldering charcoal briquette, then doused it in gasoline. For about two hours, I was drenched in sweat, my head throbbed and I felt like I was going to puke my guts out. Then I felt like I was going to die. My stomach made unspeakable noises and produced even more unspeakable odors. Pete laughed at me a whole lot. But it was worth it. (Check out more photo evidence after the jump.)

Because at the end of the day, his wife Ashlee Simpson came on set and gave me a knot of twenties that added up to $500 ... I felt vindicated, and rich. Then I went back to my hotel and destroyed the bathroom.

All-in-all, a pretty excellent way to kick off VMA week. And say what you will about Wentz, he is a complete sadist ... But he definitely does not welch on a bet.

+ More revolting photos after the jump...

What could we possibly tell you about the Jonas Brothers that you don't already know? It was only a couple of weeks ago that we took you along for the ride as we embedded ourselves deep within the Jonas juggernaut as they took over New York City. We were there with them when they woke up. We walked on their stage and behind every possible scene with them. And we asked them your probing questions.

But, because you're insatiable, we're giving you more. We sat down with the Jonas Brothers again (OMJ!) before a recent show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey to discuss the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards (like, who do they want to run into at the VMAs? Are they nervous to perform?), making music videos, touring and the importance of mega-fans like you. And, like the non-stop pros they are, they just kept giving. And giving... And giving.

All this week, you'll be seeing the hysteria-inducing faces of Joe, Nick and Kevin all over MTV as we count down to their big night at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. They're up for Video of the Year and Best Pop Video Moonman trophies. And, like we said, they're performing live. Of course you're already convinced that they're the greatest thing since Instant Messenger. But will Sunday, September 7 be the night they convince the rest of the world that Jonas completely rule?

Here's a few of the interview clips we shot with the Jo Bros in New Jersey. Watch 'em and you'll get their innermost thoughts on the VMAs, their love for their fans and oh so much more.

Also, while you're here, check out their live performances of "Burnin' Up" and "S.O.S" from FNMTV. And, of course, spill that OJD.
