Lourdes just over a year old when Madonna went to the 1995 MTV VMAs, yet already Madonna had the stern scolding thing down to art. And that matronly voice of authority would come in handy at the VMAs that night, when she had to lay the smack down on (a possibly not-so-sober, if I may be so suggestive) Courtney Love, who completely and totally hijacked her VMA red carpet interview with Kurt Loder.
Watch this vintage VMA video -- it's long, but it's a great from the crate, and it's totally worth it to revel in Madonna and Courtney's bitter exchange, which ends in Madonna killing a dangerously bottomless Courtney with kindness. (Albeit that rare Madonna brand of bitchy kindness.) And to watch Courtney throw a powder compact into the interview pit. And to watch Courtney Love and Madonna's fashion turf war. And to watch Courtney Love's SUPER awkward exchange with Tabitha Soren. And to watch Courtney Love ramble on and on about Michael Stipe, ambulance drivers, astrophysics, and Birkenstocks. And to watch Courtney slither and writhe around on the ground. There's even a weird exchange about Alanis Morisette. Every time I watch it, I discover a new gem, though my favorite is "Courtney Love is in dire need of attention right now." And Madonna's inability to decide upon mock-British accent or Jersey Girl. (So she goes with both.)
Taste the faux sincerity. Enjoy the crazy.

In years past, this was one of the funniest -- and most awkward VMA moments in all of VMA history. It was the 2002 VMAs, and Britney Spears -- after she broke up with Justin Timberlake and around the time she dated Fred Durst (the beginning of the downward spiral?) took to the stage at Radio City Music Hall (also the location of the 2009 MTV VMAs) to present Michael Jackson with a birthday cake.
Britney was dressed like she'd shown up to a ladies-only Village People tribute concert. A nervous-looking Michael Jackson -- dressed half like a robot -- appeared out of it or uncertain as to why he was at the VMAs in the first place, and unfortunately what transpired was something akin to a tragic game of telephone or disastrous round of dominoes; Britney referred to Michael Jackson as "the artist of the millennium." Michael Jackson took that as a cue to accept what he was either told was or interpreted as an MTV Artist of the Millennium VMA.

The Britney-Michael Jackson VMA moment seemed funny at the time and became Just Another Michael Jackson Joke. But really, in the wake of his untimely death, it's not something to snicker at anymore (except for Britney's outfit, because that's still funny). While Michael Jackson wasn't officially accepting an Artist of the Millennium award, if such an award existed, he'd be the first one it'd go to. And the only one it'd go to. Michael Jackson was by far the biggest and most important star to ever attend the VMAs. Without him, it's hard to imagine MTV at all... How do you think MTV should remember Michael at the 2009 VMAs?

Yep. And there it is. The stupidest thing anyone's ever wore on the VMA red carpet. Besides everything Lil Kim's ever wore to the VMAs, including but not limited to her 2000 VMAs sparkly Superheroine of Boob Bondage situation.

Anyway, Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy rolled onto the red carpet at the 2006 VMAs with a REAL LIVE FREAKING MONKEY. Not like a metaphorical "monkey on my back" monkey. An actual real one. A Capuchin monkey.
I've been on the VMA red carpet (PLEASE! NO PHOTOS!), and let me tell you, the VMA red carpet is NO place for a monkey. The VMA red carpet is a place for ass-less dresses. But it happened. And I'm still talking about it, so maybe the joke's on me. Oh yeah, Pete Wentz was also wearing a cape, but you hardly noticed. BECAUSE HE ALSO HAD A LIVE MONKEY WITH HIM.
Pete's already said that he and Fall Out Boy will be at the 2009 VMAs -- see which VMA they're up for -- but this year they better BRING it on the red carpet. Live elephants, a blimp, upsidedown taxi, or ELSE.
