about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

Notebooks out, ladies, because Florida rapper Ace Hood's "The 5" interview is less a Fun Facts Fest, and more a road map to Ace Hood's bedroom. The overall takeaway: Go to Costco and stock up on M&Ms, practice your Madden skills, and remember... well, Ace makes his stance on hats pretty clear.

Ace Hood also discusses his second LP, Ruthless -- the first Ruthless single, "Overtime," is a Rocky-style pump-up jam thanks to that high-energy, epic refrain with Akon and T-Pain, as well as an autobiographical account of a high-school-era Ace. Filmed at Chaminade-Madonna College Prep (which is a SERIOUS name, especially coming from someone who went to boring-ass Benjamin Franklin High) -- the video chronicles aspiring teens and gives a personal nods to high school football, as Ace planned to go pro before an injury altered his path. But as the video illustrates, Ace Hood later visited a Florida radio station and handed over his demo to DJ Khaled, which led to a deal with Khaled's music group, and later with Def Jam.

But back to the topic at hand -- see what Pampers, graphic design, and Jazmine Sullivan have to do with Ace Hood, as he leaves an M&M trail to his bedroom in this brand-new interview.

Dive into the soft and smoky vocals of up-and-coming R&B force, Skye Taylor. The Brooklyn prodigy, whose bio boasts that she's been singing longer than she's been walking, has been a professional singer since age 11. She's shared stages with Michael Jackson and Elton John, which is just insane. I mean, think about it. That puts her on a very short list. Is Macaulay Culkin on that list? Think so...

Listen to "Blessed" -- a ballad dedicated to all the ladies who've been cheated on -- and see if you can pick out that undeniable spark of soul genius in between the whispers. Highly recommended for fans of Teairra Mari, Jazmine Sullivan, and Rihanna.

+ John Mayer sure has a lot to say about Britney Spears for not having done anything with himself in the last five years.  Irrelevant?  What?  (Pop Crunch)

+ Aussie pop rockers (and personal faves -- sooiiiiiii cuyote) The Veronicas prove they're not as 'Untouched' as people think.  (Undercover)

+ Since the not-at-all overexposed rap industry will be down a man when T.I. goes a boot-scootin' to Sing Sing, LL Cool J is holdin' auditions, ya'll!  (The Hip Hop Chronicle UK)

+ Bitty Bite (to scale):  Bored?  Help Chester French name their new mixtape?  (Chester French)

+ In caaaaase you missed this from a couple of days ago, what the EFF is wrong with Kellie Pickler???????  '07 feels so breezy!  '09 is like the French Maid from Clue!!  (Cele|bitchy)

+ It's a JoBro NO SHOW for Taylor Swift (to the 3-D Movie Premiere, that is) -- who needs them anyway when there's plenty of other sweaty men to cheer for?  (OceanUP)

+ Speaking of sweaty men, I'm sure Ne-Yo was turning it OUT while recently on the road with Jazmine Sullivan, my little soul sister.  Hey girl hey.  (Neon Limelight)

+ Yummy-on-a-stick (not skewered, but like, wraaaaapped arrrrounnd it) Gavin DeGraw will soon release some new material collectively titled Free.  Could he just take that hat off for one second?  Or FOREVER?  Seriously! We don't CARE if you have no hair a perm.  (E Spot)

Everyone has their fears. For some it's heights, for others it's spiders and we can think of at least three otherwise functional adults who STILL can't fall asleep without their nightlight on. So what gives Jazmine Sullivan goosebumps? According to her song, "Lions, Tigers and Bears," it's the thought of a broken heart.

Check out Jazmine's semi-Wizard of Oz inspired new video and watch as the five-time Grammy nominated singer (who's up for Best New Artist!) opens about the scariest thing of all: complete and utter emotional vulnerability. Well, that and getting dumped.

Sorry, but I feel the need to kvell for just a second: MAZEL TOV, Kevin, Nick Jr, and JJ! Oh, hold up -- you ain't hurd? The Jonas Brothers were nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy!

They're up against Duffy, Adele, Jazmine Sullivan (we so called that!), and Lady Antebellum -- no relation to Lady Gaga, who was nominated for Best Dance Recording (though my heart's with Hot Chip's "Ready For The Floor," but I digress...) YAY, JONAS BROTHERS! You three's like sugar on mah heart!

+ Check out the Jonas Brothers discussing their Grammy nom and their celebratory fist pump!

+ The Grammy's are coming! The Grammy's are coming! Lil Wayne's leading the pack with 8 nominations, Coldplay's close behind with (lucky number!) 7, Ne-Yo's got six, newcomer/Missy Elliott protege Jazmine Sullivan's up there with 5, and our beloved Jo Bros could take home Best New Artist. OMJ!! (MTV News)

+ Sadly, not everyone seems to be getting the recognition they deserve. Katy Perry (whose "I Kissed A Girl" was, arguably, the biggest song of '08) got shafted -- and we didn't like it. Perry received a Best Female Pop Vocals nod but won't be up for Best Record, Album or Song of the Year, or -- more importantly -- Best New Artist. Sigh. (Grammy)

+ Meanwhile, our friendzies at BWE have broken down the Album of the Year nominees into five simple categories. Our fave? Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' Raising Sand, a.k.a. "The Album That No One Has Heard Of Or Possesses Any Evidence That It Actually Exists, But Holy Sh*t, We Have To Let It Win." (Best Week Ever)

+ International superstar Kanye West to put aside his music career and become a lowly fashion intern instead. (NYT, via Gawker)

+ Also? When Kanye's done playing fashionista, he won't be going back to rapping. "Hip-hop is over for me," 'Ye says. "I now want to be grouped [alongside] the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles. And I'm not going to get there by doing just another rap album full of samples." (ContactMusic)

+ A photog is suing total non-couple Chris Brown and Rihanna for allegedly roughing him up -- and stealing his $3K camera. (Scandalist)

+ Diddy's never been one for subtlety, a fact made clear by the name of the Bad Boy mogul's newest fragrance: I Am King. (Remote Control)

+ Is teen queen Miley Cyrus seriously filing for legal emancipation (i.e. divorcing her parents) so she can (continue to?) date 20-year-old underwear models and run away with all her cash money? Eh, probably not. (PopCrunch)

Truth time! We've been chugging along on the Estelle train (Choo-choo!) ever since we first heard/downloaded/ruined (by slaughtering it at Sing Sing Karaoke) "American Boy" back in March. But in our (admittedly) way-biased opinion, her new video, "Come Over," -- the third single off her breakthrough sophomore album, Shine) has everything you want out of a four-minute (and six-second) track:

Wispy/hypnotic soprano vocals? Check. Shiny, Hefty-bag inspired little black dress? Check. Smooth reggae beats from a cornrowed/shades-wearing Sean Paul? Double check.

And let's not forget the fact that she looks absolutely flawless (love those thick, lustrous maybe-it's-Maybelline lashes!) despite rocking an edgy, Rihanna-like side 'do and an impossibly pointy pink strapless number. So check it out, watch Estelle send those amazing/regrettable late-night drunken(?) text messages (Booty call!) and give it up for her new, sultry Jazmine Sullivan/"Need U Bad" sound.

+ Plus, watch Estelle and Kanye West rock the EMAs with their live (and oh-so-topical) rendition of "American Boy." It's an Obama-nation!

We don't really know Jazmine Sullivan anymore. Gone are the innocent trappings of youth, the understated soulfulness and the bouncy, reggae beats we saw in "Need U Bad" -- not to mention the days where Sullivan wore her heart on her sleeve and literally begged her ex to take her back. The new Jazmine is a liberated chick, a vigilante Foxy Brown who responds to her boyfriend's unfaithfulness by taking a crowbar to his car.

Even her voice sounds different -- her new vocals deeper, throatier and more confident somehow -- giving her new video, "Bust Your Windows," the overall effect of Mary J. Blige re-imagining Carrie Underwood's "Before Her Cheats." (Or something...)

So watch both women's odes to revenge-motivated vandalism, and get acquainted with the new, tough-as-nails Jazmine. We have a feeling she's gonna be around for a long time coming.

Some people will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame. (See: Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire? and the entire cast of Shot at Love 2). But for every attention-starved D-lister who's only in it for the tabloid validation (we're looking at you, Kim Kardashian!) there's a talented newcomer who's less interested in being "super, super famous" than she is on establishing herself as an artist.

Of course, when you're as talented as Jazmine Sullivan, superstardom inevitably comes with the territory. And though she's not above sneaking into Stevie Wonder's grandson's birthday party to help jumpstart her career, Jazmine says she's all about "want[ing] people to respect me."

Check out this exclusive video interview and hear what Missy Elliott's protege has to say about finding mainstream success with her hit single, "Need U Bad." Then watch the video, and download the reggae-infused track that's given Jazmine her first taste of unsolicited fame.

Most 21-year-olds we know have messy apartments (if they even have their own place), and no clue what they want to do with their lives. Then again, most 21-year-olds we know aren't rising superstars who've been singing since before they were still in Pampers. But don't hate on Jazmine Sullivan just because she's got a hot new single -- "Need U Bad," off her new LP, Fearless, out in September -- and the co-sign of Missy Elliott.

The overachiever's been at it since she was five, but she didn't catch her first big break until her early teens, when she traded in her church hymnals for a spot on Showtime at the Apollo, followed by a gig singing for Stevie Wonder. Since then, she's seen one record deal fizzle, but rebounded by landing a new contract with J. Records, and collaborating with Christina Milian and Fantasia. If we were Alicia Keys, we'd be slightly nervous right now.
