about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

The leaves are leaving the trees and the kids are back in school. It's starting to look like Woodie weather out there, no?

MTVU's annual award show--held this year on December 4th--honors those artists who put it down on college campuses everywhere; celebrating the music the kids listen to while studying to become the future leaders of America, etc. And the best part about this show? You can vote to determine who wins!

This year features a really healthy crop of artists. Let's take a gander at some of the categories and nominees, shall we?

For the Woodie of the Year Award, for the artist who made the biggest splash on college campuses this year, we've got Asher Roth, Kings Of Leon, Drake, Silversun Pickups and MGMT.

In the category of Breaking Woodie, which honors up and coming artists who have made headway with the kids, the nominees are Grizzly Bear, Never Shout Never, Wale, La Roux, Friendly Fires and Passion Pit.

Probably my favorite category, Left Field Woodie, which features artists who defy classification, features nominees like Amanda Blank, Major Lazer, Janelle Monae and P.O.S.

You can also vote in the categories Performing Woodie, Good Woodie and College Radio Woodie, BMOC Woodie and Best Video Woodie.

We already hit up Holy Ghost! in an episode of "The 5" a little while back, but this condensed, "150 Words Or Less" chat has plenty of info on these NYC dance mavens.

Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser talk about getting together a couple of years ago and making a name for themselves crafting remixes for the likes of Moby, Cut Copy and Kings of Leon.

They also talk about the "futuristic, retro disco" of their newish single, "I Will Come Back," and the rigors of DJ'ing most nights out of the year.

Check out the interview as well as the video for "I Will Come Back" below.

+ Move over "Drake's Knee's" Twitter! Time to make some room for "Teyana's Mustache," another fake Twitter account named after a celeb's body part. What's next?? "PammiesBoobays?" (Twitter)

+ Kings of Leon tore up the Today show stage this past Friday at NYC's Rockefeller Center. These guys are sooooo hot and sound so GOOD!! I need to go towel off now, if you'll excuse me. (The Rad Report)

+ Gotta scroll down a bit after you click, but here's a really cute interview with Demi Lovato, who topped the Billboard charts last week at #1 with her sophomore album "Here We Go Again." Congrats, Demi! (Katie & Karleigh)

+ This one is bringing the Monday LOLz: Whitney Houston's Good Morning America performance next month will be taped instead of sung live because Ms. Houston is "not a morning person." Is that what we're calling it these days? (PopCrunch)

+ No Doubt's Gwen Stefani and Paramore's Hayley Williams teamed up in concert together in Irvine, CA at what was at the least an unforgettable show. (Neon Limelight)

+ Remember when Rihanna almost got in trouble for giving a tattoo to her tattoo artist? Well, now Chris Brown is doing the same crap. (Singersroom Celebs)

+ Rocker Dave Grohl got a street named after him in his hometown of Warren, OH. (NME)

+ The gargantuan line-up for 2009 Lollapalooza at Chicago's Grant Park was just announced, and it's fuller than a tick on a three-day suck!! The roster includes HUGE acts like Depeche Mode, The Killers, Snoop Dogg, and Beastie Boys, plus more of your favorites like Kings of Leon, Asher Roth, Santigold, and Silversun Pickups. What? NO CHROMEO?? (The Tripwire)

+ Today we mourn the loss of Ozzy Osbourne's dog Little Bit, who was shredded to, um... bits by a coyote. (Sleaze Roxx)

+ Kelly Rowland has bean tearing up the charts both overseas and stateside recently, with the rise of her new single "When Love Takes Over." Tonight we'll get to see her perform it live on the So You Think You Can Dance results show with French DJ David Guetta. Can't wait! (Neon Limelight)

+ American Idol winner Jordin Sparks just dropped her next single "S.O.S." and, thankfully, it's a DANCE track (all the gays say "Ay-ohhhhhh!!!"). What makes it even more awesome is that it samples the old freestyle song "Let The Music Play." Love it. (Perez Hilton)

+ Rapper Bow Wow seemed to be a little down in the Twitter dumps, as manifested in this Tweet from yesterday. (Bossip)

+ Man, I am craving some Toblerone after hearing that Maroon 5 are heading to Switzerland to work on their third album with Mutt "You're-an-idiot-for-cheating-on-Shania-Twain" Lange. (NME)

What is a "TV/TV," and why MUST you have one?

1. TV/TV recently recorded with Bleu. Who is Bleu? Bleu is the producer responsible for Jonas Brothers, Boys Like Girls and Hanson. Boom -- there goes the dynamite.

2. TV/TV have already sold out shows at New York City's most exclusive venues --> The Knitting Factory, Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom. ShamWOW.

3. TV/TV have cut their teeth touring with rock role models like The Bravery, Artist Vs. Poet and Anarbor.

4. You're actually already a fan. Not only did lead singer Josh Ocean appear in an episode of MTV's Made, but TV/TV tunes have popped up in the soundtracks of The Hills, The Real World, Living Lohan (SCORE!) and many more!

5. Dude. Look at them.

The studly foursome, who share a tiny apartment in NYC's East Village, have been turning out jam after electro-sleaze jam since 2006, giving you way more than five reasons to be obsessed with them. Listen to their glammed-out, big-city-Kings-Of-Leon-jamming-on-AC/DC sound, and add your name to the list of TV/TV converted!

Though many call it "The Country Music Capital Of The World," Nashville has a whole lot more to offer than 10-gallon hats and Ford pick-ups. Not that there's anything wrong with Ford...

As evidenced by this week's MTV Featured Artist, Kings Of Leon, a Nashville band can wear pearl snaps down the fronts of their shirts and bump the Grand Ole Opry in their F-150s and still rock the Levi's off of any big-city rock radio station.

This video playlist is a big-up to bands like Raconteurs, Paramore and Be Your Own Pet, who embrace Nashville's musical heritage without letting it define them. Watch a set of new videos from the best of the new Nashville scene, and see if you can smell the country on 'em!

Last night was a really big deal for Kings Of Leon, but it's hard to imagine them stressing it too hard. They always play it so cool. But nervous or not, Tennessee's Followill brothers (and cousin) had one of the biggest rapt audiences of their young lives last night, and they flat-out killed it on whoa-oh anthem, "Use Somebody."

The Only By The Night single won the boys plenty of new admirers last night, but they already had some high-profile fans in the audience. Zac Efron (who won Best Male Performance for High School Musical 3: Senior Year) and Robert Pattinson (who won pretty much everything else) to name two! The show's studliest guests (although those Followills give 'em a run for their money!) both have their iPods loaded up with Kings Of Leon.

And as we've told you before, Miley Cyrus (who fist-bumped God for making "The Climb" Best Song) and Taylor Swift (who popped up in the Twilight segment of Andy Samberg's intro) have big crushes on KOL bassist Jared Followill. So, it's no surprise that the 2009 MTV Movie Awards gave Kings Of Leon a very warm welcome, and kept clapping well into the commercial break!

Watch their full performance of "Use Somebody," below, and see what Hollywood's all worked up about.

+ A battle royale for Best Song From A Movie! Miley versus Bruce Springsteen (like a BAWSE!) versus JAI HO versus Paramore!

Great news for Miley Cyrus: it's just been announced that Kings Of Leon will perform at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards! Miley, who's nominated in the Best Song From A Movie category for Hannah Montana: The Movie showstopper, "The Climb," has confessed that she has a big crush on the Southern band of brothers.

Particularly to Miley's liking is Kings Of Leon bassist/pianist Jared Followill, whose blue eyes and shaggy hair have won plenty of hearts before hers. In an MTV News interview, the boys professed an interest in cracking the silver screen, imagining roles for themselves in Pineapple Express Part 2, if it's ever made. Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Miley? You're a movie star... This could be a very good lead-in to a lasting "friendship."

What should Miley say to break the ice? Got any good ideas? Watch KOL's "On Call" video below, post some pick-up lines for Miley in the comments, and get stoked for what's now guaranteed to be a balls-out MTV Movie Awards show, Sunday, May 31 at 9PM!

Anjulie is obsessed with music. Since she was a kid, the Toronto temptress has been singing and writing songs. And although she's had some success penning hits for other artists, has toured with Jesse McCartney and had her own songs featured on The Hills and The City, nothing up to this point compares to "Boom," the lead single from her Boom EP.

Anjulie's new single is as sultry as an August apartment in a power-out. Her bold vocals ride a seductive boom-bap beat, reeling in listeners with whispered sexuality.

The Adria Petty (Kings Of Leon, Paris Hilton)-directed video is equally alluring. In it, a bustier-clad Anjulie walks a tightrope between mile-high desert crags, coyly twirling an umbrella. She bats her lashes -- every line a come-on -- tip-toeing in fishnets toward a relationship she knows won't work. And then... BOOM! She falls, and the whole thing comes to undulating life.

Watch Anjulie's new video, "Boom," now.
