about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

After announcing their net swag surfing skills on their last video, "Dot Com," the New Boyz return with "Tie Me Down."

With a little bit of the love of Ray J., the New Boyz engage in a bit of social networking weird science, conjuring up friends and more-than-just friends with a click of a button (much like LMFAO did in their "La La La" video). Hot girls jumping though some kind of Matrix-style portal to hang out with you on your drab couch? There's an app for that. With technology like this at their fingertips, you can't possibly expect these either of these dudes to be one-woman kind of men... hence the song title.

It's all happening here. Your favorite jerks, the New Boyz, are back with this homage to the OS, this on-ramp to the information super highway, this tribute to domain names..."Dot Com." Seemingly produced entirely with tools found in your basic Mac applications folder, "Dot Com" is a loving, if vague ode to the wonders of the internet (mostly the ease with which it allows one to talk to their female fans...and their mothers).

The video? Well, operating under the likely wrongheaded assumption that director Matt Alonzo powerbooked this whole thing, you gotta say that the special effects are pretty tight! Faux-Hype-Williams flashing lights! Green screen work that superimposes the New Boyz on to roller coasters at full speed or deep under the ocean! It's like outtakes from Avatar! Your move, James Cameron.

Classic conundrum for celebrities engaged in social networking -- how do you find the time to stay relevant AND engage in social networking? But PAY ATTENTION, celebrities. New Boyz, the makers of "You're A Jerk" -- which had us busting out our skinny jeans back in June 2009 before they dropped their brand-new album, Skinny Jeanz & A Mic -- learned to make their own beats (thanks, YouTube!), now they're leading the Jerkin' movement, shopping for hats and skinny jeans, AND THEY STILL FIND TIME TO TWEET! And hustle for a Skittles and/or a New Era endorsement.

Watch New Boyz discuss five things you need to know about them. Then go watch the "You're A Jerk" video again, because it never gets old. And of course, follow New Boyz on Twitter.

L.A. underage duo Ben J and Dominic Thomas (AKA Legacy) go by New Boyz, and they don't even have an LP out yet, but they've already caught the ear of the LA Times, the New York Times, and the outlet that really matters most out of the three, at least musically -- YouTube, where their single, "You're A Jerk" has already been viewed over 1 million times. "You're A Jerk," LA Boyz's satisfyingly simplistic insta-hit may not be Shakespeare, but then again, Marcel Duchamp signed a freaking toilet in 1917, and people still pay money to see that sh+t.

"You're A Jerk," the next single off the New Boyz's Skinny Jeans and a Mic EP, is a sure-fire summer hit, and while it lacks the in-your-pants promise of "Birthday Sex," it's got more staying power thanks to old-school Neptunes-esque stripped-back/ drip-drop production, smooth vocals, and the L.A. unit's signature second-wave post-modern B-Boy flavor. (Again -- Skinny jeans.)

Watch New Boyz' pay tribute to the Jerk in their "Jerk It Out" video, and don't even try to resist the urge to jerk. Unless you're strictly on that BBU juke tip.
