OK Go's "Needing/Getting" video is the first video performed by a car. (Sorry, Gary Numan.)

OK Go's revolutionary "Needing/Getting" video, which premiered today as a pre-Super Bowl commercial, might look like a three-minute-54-second musical joyride through a synchronous science, music and art project, but the video was anything but a serendipitous happy accident involving a cool car. How the "Needing/Getting" video was made wasn't rocket science, but it wasn't too far from it either. I talked to lead singer Damian Kulash, Jr., who co-directed the video with Brian L. Perkins, about how the band -- and a team of experts ranging from physicists to his own parents -- made the "Needing/Getting" video.

Creating the world's first musical racetrack and world's first song performed and recorded by a car took four months of careful planning to create the awe-inspiring video, which required the band to break down each part of the song, record each segment, and then piece and mix the song back together. If it sounds time-consuming that's because it was.

"It consumed my whole life for four months," Kulash, Jr. said. "We were out in the desert until midnight every day. I don't even remember having a life outside of that. It was such a surreal world. Everyone who came out to help for a day or two was like 'I can't believe you built such an insane wonderland in the desert.'"

Here's how that insane wonderland in the desert was built.

THE IDEA:
Unlike most celebrity endorsements borne of corporate marketing campaigns or music videos featuring blatantly obvious product placement (a text message sent to a phone that not-at-all-inconspicuously features a belabored brand close-up has been a staple of most videos shot in the past few years) the car-performance concept came to Kulash before Chevy ever entered the picture. "It was an idea I had about a year ago. Our co-director, Brian L. Perkins -- he's a old friend of mine, he was in my college band, and he's directed some of our other videos -- works for an agency that works with Chevy. I told him if you ever have a car company crazy enough to try something this awesome, then I have this idea. Sure enough, Chevy thought it was a great idea and they came on board and he got to direct it with us."

If you're OK Go, and you're trying to come up with a concept for your "Needing/Getting" video, you might find yourself in a bit of a dilemma considering you already called in a favor to a brain trust of design engineers, tech wizards and some of the guys behind NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to help you build a Rube Goldberg machine out of more than 700 parts for your "This Too Shall Pass" science-project-turned video. But you're OK Go. So actually, you probably never find yourself in any sort of creative brain freeze because you make some of the most intellectually stimulating and inventive music videos this side of the Peter Gabriel archives.

OK Go's "Needing/Getting" video, which premiered on MTV.com during the Super Bowl, employs 55 pianos, 288 guitars, more than 1,100 homemade instruments (many of which get the wind knocked out of them at speeds of 40 miles per hour), and a racetrack painstakingly planned and laid out in the Acton, California, desert. Plus an entire team of physicists, and one very musically inclined car -- in this case, a Chevy Sonic with capabilities and add-ons that probably do not come with the standard package, (but that's just a guess). You may have seen the Super Bowl commercial featuring the band strapping into the car, followed by a sound bite of "Needing/Getting." But having seen the video in its entirety, all I can say is fasten your seat belts and hang on.

We have few rules over here at Team Buzzworthy, but one is unyielding and unbreakable: If a song says "Featuring The Muppets," we're covering it. Video innovators OK Go join the group for a cover of "The Muppet Show" theme song, the latest single from the Muppet tribute album The Green Album.

After a few winking nods to their treadmill video "Here It Goes Again" and Google Chrome experimental video "All Is Not Lost," OK Go cede the spotlight to their felt counterparts, with the video displaying the same darting, manic feel of the original show. After penguins fly through the air and Swedish chefs show off their Scandinavian meats, the video inverts tradition, allowing The Muppets to control the humans. Though all we know is that elderly curmudgeons Statler and Waldorf naturally make an appearance, and all is right with the world.

Stick around for the ending, which features numerous fake endings and dream sequences involving both groups and some bizarre yelling in the bedroom. (Not that kind!) Just watch.

Power-pop group OK Go has created some of the most indelible and unique videos in the past few years, with elaborate Rube Goldbergs, trained dogs and choreographed treadmills all contributing to their visual style. The group's streak continues with their new one, "All Is Not Lost," which utilizes bodysuits, a glass table and a professional dance troupe to create a work that's more Google Chrome experiment than traditional video.

The group teamed up with director Trish Sie (sister of singer Damian Kulash), modern dance troupe Pilobolus and the guys at Google to create a video using 12 distinct windows in Chrome. Yeah. Dudes are cutting edge. Our favorite part: You can type any message you want, and it'll be incorporated into the dance.

"Working with Pilobolus -- and of course with Trish -- has been great because they share our belief that last century's creative boundaries are irrelevant," Kulash said in a statement. "You don't have to choose in advance whether your outlet is records, or films, or dances, or a computer program. Videos don't have to be subordinate advertising material for albums, and dance doesn't have to be confined to the theater."

Short version: Just watch this. Seriously. You'll thank us.

The group will release the All Is Not Lost EP on Aug. 9.

Hey party people. Allow me to introduce myself: I'm Leslie Simon. In addition to being an editor at MTV.com, I'm also the author of two books -- Everybody Hurts: The Essential Guide To Emo Culture and Wish You Were Here: An Essential Guide To Your Favorite Music Scenes -- and I'm currently putting the finishing touches on my third. It's called Geek Girls Unite: How Fangirls, Bookworms, Indie Chicks, And Other Misfits Are Taking Over The World and it comes out this fall! Before I came to MTV, I spent a bunch of years at Alternative Press magazine, covering everyone from Paramore to Brand New to My Chemical Romance. In other words, I'm your garden variety music geek.

When I was asked if I'd be interested in writing a column for Buzzworthy, I immediately jumped at the chance. (Actually, I think I did the Dougie and then ended with the Bernie. Even I can admit it wasn't cute.) Regardless, each week I'll be offering up a themed music playlist. For you podcast lovers, think of it as "This American Life" but without all the talking... and no Ira Glass. OK, you get the point.

Some weeks, I might be inspired by what highly glamorous thing I did over the weekend (i.e. Songs You Should Practice Yoga To That Don't Involve Weird Chanting). Other weeks, my inspiration could stem from a trip to the grocery store (i.e. Songs I Wish Had Muzak Remixes). Just like a stop on Charlie Sheen's Violent Torpedo Of Truth Tour, you never know what you're gonna get!

This week, I'm kicking off my inaugural column with a theme I'm particularly smitten by: dudes in suits. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing in life that can't be fixed by listening to a cute guy in a blazer play an electric guitar and sing with a British accent. (American accents are OK, too. I'm an equal opportunity dudes-in-suits supporter.) Get ready for music from The Wombats, OK Go, Patrick Stump and Death Cab For Cutie.

Finally, if you'd like to keep up with all my musings, please visit my website and follow me on Twitter (@redpatterndress).

1. The Wombats' "Anti D": I'm sorry but how can you not fall in love with a tune that opens with lyrics like, "Please allow me to be your antidepressant/I, too, am prescribed as freely as any decongestant." Brilliant! I've been a fan of The Wombats ever since I heard their first single, "Let's Dance To Joy Division," and my obsession for this British trio has only gotten more intense with time. Poppy yet perverse, indie yet accessible, The Wombats provide the perfect soundtrack to everything from a debaucherous evening to a lonely morning and everything in between.

Watch The Wombats' "Anti D" video.

2. OK Go's "This Will Be Our Year": This classic jam appears at the end of The Romantics, which I wasted two hours watching last weekend. The movie is just mediocre, but the song is fantastic. Originally recorded by The Zombies in 1968, "This Will Be Our Year" is a supersweet power-pop ballad that barely shows its age, especially when carted out over the ending credits of a St. Elmo's Fire-esque romantic comedy. OK Go re-recorded the song a couple years ago, and their version appeared in the flick John Tucker Must Die, which I actually enjoyed a bunch. (Yes, I just admitted that.)

Listen to "This Will Be Our Year"

3. Patrick Stump's "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)": I was lucky enough to catch Patrick perform this past weekend at Joe's Pub here in New York, and he totally blew me away, especially when he played "Spotlight"... twice. Honestly, he could've played it 10 more times, and it still wouldn't have been enough. This song is musical Prozac: Play it when you see storm clouds on the horizon, the skies will part instantly and you'll feel like you can conquer the world. If that doesn't work, watch this video.

Listen to "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)"

4. Death Cab For Cutie's "You Are A Tourist": Frontman Ben Gibbard wears a mean suit and writes an even meaner rock song. From the tune's galloping guitars to lyrics like, "If you feel just like a tourist in the city you were born/Then, it's time to go/And you find your destination with so many different places to call home," "Tourist" encourages you to stop being a spectator in your own life. Get out there and live it! Oh, and it also didn't hurt that the Death Cab cuties cleaned up real good for the song's live one-take video, which was a visual spectacle of neon lights and kaleidoscopic choreography. Seeing is believing.

We've seen OK Go make a video with dogs. ("White Knuckles"). We've seen OK Go melt our minds ("WTF"). And we've seen them perform in lockstep with a marching band ("This Too Shall Pass"). For the group's newest video, "Last Leaf," OK Go shows us a whole new way of looking at...toast. And we don't see them at all.

Made in collaboration with animator George McFetridge, OK Go's new video is a simple idea, executed brilliantly. The video is made up entirely of still shots, with 15 photographs making up one second of video. Still shots of what? Toast.

Of course, with OK Go, nothing is as simple as it seems. So these images of toast are ornately animated, by the aforementioned McFetridge, to match the lyrics to the song.

It's a lovely, subtle and inventive clip to match a lilting and hushed tune. The video was directed by OK Go, Nadeem Mazen and Ali Mohammad. "Last Leaf" is from OK Go's fantastic Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky.

Canadian rock group Hollerado's band is a play on the state name Colorado, and they've got a new video, for their song "Americanarama." And the video seems to be, largely, about Philadelphia. So where, exactly, are these guys coming from? Well, to judge by this new clip, it looks like the early- to mid-1980s!

"Americanarama," taken from Hollerado's Record In A Bag album, features choreography that brilliantly mimics the stiff movements of 8-bit video game characters. As the angular song winds along, the people in the background go from performing stiff dance moves to spelling out the lyrics of the song. It's all very OK Go, in an awesome way.

The video comprises 24 volunteer dancers, and it took 424 movement cues to shoot. Incredible stuff directed by Greg Jardin. And, fun fact: One of the dancers played the serial killer on season 5 of "The Wire."

Hollerado's Record In A Bag is out now. Catch them on tour with Free Energy.

OK Go is known for its incredibly charming videos that usually take the internet by storm. Well, with the video for "White Knuckles," taken from the Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky album, this group will be taking YOUR HEART by storm... WITH CUTE DOGS!

"White Knuckles" features some awesome and adorable rescued dogs performing any number of tricks. Seriously, the guys of OK Go are really just background props in this one. It's all about the dogs.

OK Go has made some wonderful videos: "Here It Goes Again," "This Too Shall Pass," "WTF?" (both of which you can watch below). But "White Knuckles" might be our favorite. Have a heart and watch OK Go's new video below. And, if you can, take OK Go's advice and donate to the ASPCA.
