By now, you've undoubtedly heard the amazingly power ballady and accidentally epic Lady Gaga track "The Edge Of Glory," which also means you've already channeled your inner Kelly McGillis with us. Now, I know that the song's about her late grandfather, and I'm in no way trying to make light of that. But there are SO many allusions and references and SAX parts that I do have to talk about that. Because "The Edge Of Glory" is one of those songs whose whole is way greater than the sum of its parts. So grab your huge remote control, pause Teen Witch for a second and get off your Swatch phone (because you KNOW you're on the phone AND watching a movie at the same time -- DUH). We're deep-diving into the bag of Wild 'N Mild Fritos and deconstructing the song to find all of the '80s and '90s monster tracks Gaga's new song alludes to that all equal one big, huge song that could have rolled over the closing credits of Thelma & Louise instead of that "Thunderbird" instrumental thingie that Hans Zimmer dreamed up. So many little musical gems, little monsters. Here goes!
Celine Dion, "To Love You More": All right, so first and foremost you canNOT listen to "The Edge Of Glory" without hearing Celine Dion's "To Love You More." This song represents the best of '90s power ballads: soaring vocals, power belting, a duet with a VIOLIN??? Are you KIDDING me?? Celine is the O.G. alien, right? There is no way anyone who hits those high notes while pounding her chest and making scary faces could be human. Also, listen to the Tony Moran remix -- think Whitney Houston Thunderpuss (yes, THUNDERpuss) remixes from the same era. You will hear what I mean.
Pat Benatar, "We Belong": When "The Edge Of Glory" starts out, you almost hear a little Pat Benatar "We Belong" in there, sweardahGOD. That thumping bass line? It's a classic trick that propels the song forward, makes it sound so urgent, so... EPIC!
Boy Meets Girl, "Waiting For A Star To Fall": There are tons of examples of sax solos in the '80s and 90's, and even some sax solos done only on synthesizers (hayyy alliteration). But Boy Meets Girl's "Waiting For A Star To Fall" is your ultimate reference point for the proverbial, obligatory '80s sax solo. Skip to 2:37 and drink in the amazingness.
Steve Winwood, "Valerie": OK, there is no doubt that Mother Monster reminisced with a few Steve Winwood songs before she recorded "The Edge Of Glory." But "Valerie" is so VERY (to quote my favorite '80s movie, Heathers). It has an AMAZING synth solo -- funny how it's also around 2:40. Soo good..
Roxette, "Dangerous": Ooh boy. Swedish rock-pop band Roxette was one of the definitive bands of the late '80s and early '90s. I never really knew anyone who bought their music, but if one of their songs came on the radio, everyone knew every word. The accent, the tight pants, the red lips, the sexy bleach-blonde hair... it all works SO WELL together. But the main takeaway from "Dangerous" is Marie Fredriksson's (she actually had a name, and it wasn't Roxette) gravelly sweet voice.
So there you have it. Some of my favorite '80s and '90s references I hear in Lady Gaga's pop-rock spiked sugar bomb explosion that is "The Edge Of Glory." What do you think of the song and its references? Amiright?

You probably know Miranda Cosgrove mostly from her role as the titular character on the Nickelodeon show "iCarly." But if you've had the pleasure of listening to any of her music, especially "Kissin U" from her 2010 album, Sparks Fly, you'll know she's quite the burgeoning pop star as well.
In these exclusive interview clips, Miranda talks about both sides of her career. In the first clip, she chats about the thrill of getting to meet Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, via her producer Dr. Luke. In the second clip, she discusses the weirdest "iCarly" fan video she ever saw. WARNING: It's gross!
While we had the opportunity to pick her brain, we also got Miranda to tell us about what she's listening to these days (Radiohead is "ruling her iPod"), what her favorite karaoke song is (Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" or Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"), and whether she's team "Twilight" or "Hunger Games. ("Twilight" FTW!)
+ Check out Miranda Cosgrove interview clips and her latest video "Dancing Crazy" below. Miranda Cosgrove's High Maintenance EP comes out March 15.

Selena Gomez isn't just a "Waverly Place" wizard or a paparazzi magnet (though she's those things too.) She's also a born performer. Selena recently stopped by MTV's new daily pop culture digest show, "The Seven," to chat a bit and perform an awesome acoustic version of her single, "Round & Round."
With the backdrop of Times Square in the background, Selena answered questions from fans about her new album, A Year Without Rain. When queried about her favorite track off her new album, Selena almost immediately responds with "Rock God," which features the songwriting and backing vocal talents of some total unknown named Katy Perry. Selena also expressed a desire to perform "Love Is A Battlefield" with Pat Benatar. That totally needs to happen.
Check out Selena Gomez's interview from "The Seven" as well as a lovely acoustic performance of "Round & Round," both below.

The good news for Katy Perry fans, in the lead-up to the release of her sophomore album, Teenage Dream, is how generous the "California Gurls" singer has been with her new music. Rather than having to wait for the official release date (gasp!), Perry's been steadily releasing songs over iTunes -- dropping "Teenage Dream" and "Not Like The Movies" in quick succession.
Like I said, it's great news for Katy Perry fans. Not such great news for her exes, like, say, Travie McCoy, who some fans speculate might be the subject of her latest song, "Circle The Drain."
This serrated, edgy rock number, produced by Tricky Stewart, finds Perry taking aim at an ex-lover with a pill problem, with lyrIcs like, "Thought I was the exception/I could rewrite your addiction/You could have been the greatest/But you’d rather get wasted."
Ouch! She's going in! Check out the song below. Teenage Dream is out August 24.

When we first met one-woman show Just Kait, we were blown away by her musicianship and raucous pop-rock jams, and charmed by the matter of fact way it was presented in videos like "Sick" and "U Suck."
So her new video for her cover of Donna Summer's disco classic, "Hot Stuff," comes as something of surprise. Cutting between footage from the MTV film Turn The Beat Around, which airs February 26, the clip begins with some dancers getting all limbered up (a la Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted Snake" vid). Things proceed; the Turn The Beat Around dancers dance, fall for one another, and party it up, encouraging me to want to watch the movie.
While all this is going down, we also get some flashy footage of Just Kait rocking out in front of some name-in-lights action. Just Kait's verison of the song is far more rock than the original, as would be expected; the whole thing has a very Pat Benatar vibe to it. Watch the video, and watch the Turn The Beat Around trailer too.

According to this MTV News story, Demi Lovato's video for "Remember December" is, in a word, about, "taking control as a girl. It's like girl empowerment. Yeah, divas!" Okay, that's 11 words. But who's counting?
In the "Remember December" video (posted to Demi's Twitter), you can see Demi Lovato's Gaga-esque sequined hoodie in all it's glory. But that's only a smidge of what's going down. Lovato is fully channeling Pat Benatar here. She rocks some very-Gaga studded leather gloves and a biker jacket with Sgt. Pepper shoulders as she directs her band and exorcises some rotten relationship demons. Also sounds like someone's been listening to some Paramore. It's a full-on pop-punk anthem. Yeah, divas!
