Today on Star Spotting we are in mourning, as we look back fondly on Katy Perry's long, lustrous hair. Yes, it is still shampoo-commercial shiny, but it no longer stretches halfway down her back.
No, as you can see here, the raven-haired California Gurl has chopped off her long locks, getting herself an incredibly chic bob. New album, new hair, we suppose.
The transformation took place somewhere between Perry's trip to Australia, where she was spotted shopping in and around Sydney last week (with her usual long and lovely hair) and the above pic, as she arrived at Tokyo's Narita Airport.
Perry is in the Far East to promote her new album, Teenage Dream, which drops next Tuesday, August 24. Take a look at two videos below: Katy's wigged out "California Gurls" and Pavement's ode to losing your locks, "Cut Your Hair."
UPDATE: Looks like we may have jumped the gun with our hysteria, as it seems Katy has been snapped rocking a wig in the past that looks very much like the hairstyle (or wig) she's wearing above. Developing!

The folks at MTV Iggy had the fine idea to get the wonderful indie rock band Surfer Blood to play its jam "Floating Vibes" at the Lower East Side club The Delancey and capture the whole thing on camera.
Surfer Blood's breakout debut album, Astro Coast, is full of jangly, slightly askew pop-rock gems that recall the best moments of classic indie bands like Pavement, while tipping its musical cap to classic rock stalwarts such as Cheap Trick. I know I've mentioned Cheap Trick a lot recently, but that's because Cheap Trick is awesome.
Anyway! Surfer Blood ran through "Floating Vibes" as well as "Take It Easy," and its single "Swim (To Reach The End)." Check out the videos below. You can check out the MTV Iggy blog post about the filming of the live session right here. Astro Coast is out now.

A funny thing must've happened on the way to the Nickeodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2009 this past Saturday. Seems like Joe Jonas tripped and fell on a pair of scissors, stood up and turned into Adrian Grenier 2.0, except exponentially better looking, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong -- I wouldn't kick Adrian Grenier off my flip-n-...er... friend! for eating Lunchables, but Adrian's hot 50% of the time, and the other 50% he kinda has a weird ape-like expression that makes me feel like I can't really trust him, whereas Joe Jonas looks good ALWAYS.
Anyway, what's your take on Joe Jonas' new haircut? I mean CLEARLY it's MILES above Camp Rock, and it also looks a little easier to maintain next to what I'll refer to as his A Little Less Longer hair, since this is clearly his Lines, Vines And Trying Times (or whatever the new Jonas Brothers album will be called) look.
Leave a comment below, and tell me whether you love Joe Jonas' new hair, hate it (traitor!), or prefer Adrian Grenier, and why!
And, appropriately, watch Pavement's classic "Cut Your Hair" video.
Man, indie rock has come a long way since the days when everything sounded like Pavement and Guided By Voices. Now, at the end of 2008, the spectrum has grown sooo wide that the term can apply just as accurately to a hyper-political Sri-Lankan dance-rapper and a 30-piece Swedish joy-pop collective... both of them on major labels! Weird! And not only are M.I.A. and I'm From Barcelona both generally categorized as indie rock, but now they both have videos for songs called "Paper Planes!" Let's examine a few of the things that set them apart...
1) M.I.A. is a solo act with about 200 people, 150 sub sandwiches, 90 gold watches and 30 different outfits in her "Paper Planes" video.
I'm From Barcelona has 30 members, but only one of them -- lead-singer Emanuel Lundgren -- appears in "Paper Planes." While he is joined by the occasional stranger, the video centers mostly around him.
2) M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" is based around a Clash sample and the video is spread throughout New York City.
I'm From Barcelona's "Paper Planes" is based around clarinets, saxophones, flutes, trumpets, banjos, accordions and kazoos. The whole video takes place in an elevator.
3) Emanuel Lundgren has long hair and a mustache.
M.I.A. has... well... why don't you just watch the videos (M.I.A. after the jump). Play them both at the same time for a very special secret message from Daniel Johnston!
