Calling to mind the sound of Phoenix, Death Cab For Cutie and Peter, Bjorn and John, Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club make pristine indie pop with immaculate arrangements hiding a melancholy lyrical heart.
Take for instance this track, "What You Know," from the band's lovely Tourist History album, released last April. The song details a relationship in a subtly doomed state, as the track's narrator muses, "I'm not the best you could have attained."
Despite the maudlin undertones of the song,"What You Know"'s video is, on the other hand, bouncy, colorful and fun. Playing this lightly funky tune on a white soundstage, the band are surrounded by women both lounging about and taking part in some choreographed dances and cheerleader moves.
The whole thing--from the suits the band wears to the dances--is very Mod, but never campy on, say, an "Austin Powers" level.
Check out Two Door Cinema Club's video for "What You Know," below. Tourist History is out now.
Shake it up: Peter Moran
OK. Even though we were in the audience at Peter Bjorn & John's VMA Rookie Showcase set at the Palms pool in Vegas, we still can't stop watching the show over and over and over again. And we still can't help having our minds blown all over again. (Sorta like how an incredibly attractive person only gets hotter every time you see them and you're like WTF!? How's it possible for your hotness to increase exponentially every time I see you?)
Anyway, the show started out on a fairly mellow note with "Paris 2004," which we thought was gonna set the tone of the mid-afternoon outdoor show. And, of COURSE the life-affirming, everything-is-temporarily-right-in-the-universe experience of seeing "Young Folks" live -- which included a more pronounced bass line and ACTUAL, not recorded, whistling -- was basically akin to a musical baptism. UPDATE! We just saw our boy Vince was throwing down some chips in the front lobby of the Palms. Aces high!
Look who just raised the stakes on our VMA weekend star spottings! It's Adrien Grenier, hangin' by the pool at the Palms, taking in the Peter, Bjorn & John show. The Entourage star kept a low pro and, ironically enough, rolled with almost no entourage whatsoever. Low maintenance is the new black!

Even if you don't recognize their name, chance are (get it? "chances"? Vegas!? Sorry. All the heavily oxygenated air is getting to us.) you definitely know that irresistibly catchy whistle of the Swedish indie band's breakout hit, "Young Folks." And we're off to go catch Peter Bjorn & John live set by the pool. We'll return with stories and snaps!
