Earlier this year, R&B crooning sensation Trey Songz did a remix of Jay-Z's "D.O.A." which, among other things, posited the idea that Trey Songz was just trying to be the best Trey Songz he could be, not some kind of R. Kelly re-tread (in case you thought he was). Trey Songzalso took some shots at R. Kelly, saying that he was too old to be using AutoTune. (The feud was basically like The Hills with more singing.)
Funny thing is, while Songz is hardly a re-tread of R. Kelly, he does share some qualities with he who was trapped in the closet, especially on two of the singles from his '09 platter, Ready.
On "LOL :)" (yes, that's WITH a smileyface emoticon) and "I Invented Sex," Songz comes with an irrefutably catchy melody ("LOL :))"and wanton sexual arrogance ("I Invented..."), respectively; two staples of the R. Kelly repertoire. Personally I like "LOL :)" (which you can jam to your heart's content here) the more because a) Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane are on it b) it's incredibly playful, as any song about texting should be and c) IT'S CALLED LOL SMILEY FACE.
Not that there's anything particularly wrong with "I Invented Sex," which you can watch in all its NSFW/ walked-in-on-someone's-sex-tape glory below, as well as an MTV News Trey Songz interview about the "concept" surrounding the video.
First of all, let's let a l'il tear drop for Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, who never got to go prom. Okay, now roll those tears back up inside your eyeballs and chew on this; Soulja Boy Tell 'Em probably never went to prom because he was too busy doing the Soulja Boy dance and making like a zillion dollars off ringtones and downloads -- "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" is the third most-downloaded song ever. That people have paid for. Paid MONEY for.
Fortunately, Soulja Boy Tell 'Em's riches afford him many luxuries, like medallions the size of laptops, and the ability to take ALL of the girls of Flavor of Love to prom all the corsages money can buy.

What kinda world would we be living in if Soulja Boy (Tell 'em) beat out Slim Shady on TRL's all-time greatest hip-hop hits countdown? No world I'd wanna live in, that's fa show. The way I see it? Soulja Boy's lucky to have even made it onto the shortlist of the show's best-ever hip-hop videos. But the question remains... WHERE THE HULL IS LIL WAYNE? (BTW, mazel tov on that baby boy, Weezy!) I demand a recount! Damien? Get on that!
Anyway, Eminem's "Lose Yourself" found its way to #1 on today's countdown, Jay-Z's classic swagger track, "Big Pimpin'" locked up #2, Outkast's "Hey Ya" -- the song that inserted "Shake it like a Polaroid picture" into the pop culture lexicon for forevskies -- and Missy Elliott's mesmerizing "Get Ur Freak On" video made #8.
Watch the highlights below, check out the rest of TRL's greatest hip-hop videos here, and don't miss some very special out-of-studio experiences on tomorrow's show, at 3:30pm ET.

+ Have you heard the sexy new track by R. Kelly? Before things really start to heat up, Kelly sings "Girl, just let me know my access is granted." Yeah, if we'd recently been accused (but eventually acquitted!) of having non-consensual relations with an underage person, we'd be taking some extra precautions, too. (MTV)
+ Nine Inch Nails' new album lands in the Top 20, proving once again that free downloads aren't as evil as the recording industry says they are. (Rolling Stone)
+ Meanwhile, Radiohead devastates fans by canceling the super-secret show nobody was supposed to know about, anyway. (Idolator)
+ Fergie concisely describes her character's motivation in the upcoming ensemble flick, Nine. The seven-word assessment? "She's basically a prostitute on the beach." (Billboard)
+ Exactly how have The Killers changed since the release of their last album, Sam's Town? Well, for one thing, "Brandon Flowers remembered how to shave." Also, they apparently have new songs. (Stereogum)
+ Soulja Boy credits 50 Cent's "In Da Club" video with inspiring him to get into the rap game. Funny, that same video -- specifically the gratuitous shots of Fiddy's cut torso -- is also what inspired us to (finally) renew that gym membership. (MTV)
+ Cobra Starship gets rave reviews for their "colorful" Warped Tour performance, while Katy Perry and Gym Class Heroes are brought up on charges of "not kicking it hard enough." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

If XTC, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel and Franz Ferdinand had one kid each, they all grew up, went to Columbia, dressed in sensible sweaters, became obsessed with African pop, and started a band, they'd be called Vampire Weekend.
MTV Discover & Download artists Vampire Weekend, like Black Kids, are the shining-star it-kids of the "blog bands" that dominated 2007. And even though they're from the Upper West Side, they're essentially a Brooklyn band too.
Check out their new video, "A Punk" (watch for the puffy-paint customized shades -- very Soulja Boy, and all those winter accessories conjure visions of a Gap ad next fall) and see why they've got the Innernet goin' nuts.

After sitting atop Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart for seven weeks, Soulja Boy's "Crank That" slid two spots as Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss" took over the #1 slot this past week. But that doesn't mean the Soulja Boy dance craze is going to disappear anytime soon. Those superfly Superman moves are still heating up the clubs … and children's dance classes, apparently. Watch these kiddies get crunk as the boy in front totally dominates the dance floor. Surely these moves will be passed down for years to come … or not.
