If you grew up in the '90s with a steady diet of "Alternative Nation" and "120 Minutes," a certain sound will always be close to your heart. The distorted guitars and slightly disheveled melodies, the slacker attitude hiding the broken hearts and post-teenage angst underneath. It's a sound that is being resurrected by the newish band Yuck.
Formed in 2009 and made up of members from London, Hiroshima, Japan, and New Jersey, Yuck somehow capture and update that fuzzed out '90s sound. On their self-titled debut album, due out Feb. 15, the quartet make guitar rock as insanely catchy as it is seemingly off the cuff. If you're a fan of Dinosaur Jr. or The Breeders, or more current bands like The Drums or Surfer Blood, you'll definitely want to check out Yuck.
To hear songs from Yuck's self-titled debut album, head over to their MySpace page. One that album's best tracks, "Georgia," has a cool, retro-race-car-themed video, which you can watch below. Yuck is due out Feb. 15.

If you're a fan of hazy, reverb-heavy, retro girl-group punk, then 2010 must make you feel like you died and went to heaven. Between the Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls, this is like some kind of weird renaissance for gal-fronted indie rock bands. And Best Coast might be the best of all the newcomers.
Fronted by California girl, Bethany Cosentino, Best Coast put out a series of singles in 2009, all of which painted a musical picture of a Golden State fantasy. Bringing to mind everything from the Beach Boys to the B-52s to the Ronettes, as well as '90s female faves like The Breeders and Liz Phair, Best Coast's sound is fuzzy in production and pristine in melody.
Watch a beautiful, fan-made video for Best Coast's possibly best song, "When I'm With You," below, and meet the band and watch them perform "Crazy" and "When I Am With You" on Pitchfork (warning: some NSFW language). You can hear more music and get tour dates over at their MySpace. And we PRAY that Ronald McDonald really does star in their upcoming video.

Freak out, Midwesterners! Tokio Hotel just added another date to their October mini tour. BEHOLD:
Oct. 27 // Columbus, OH // Newport Music Hall
And not to be all ME ME ME, because really it's all about YOU YOU YOU, but I personally feel extra 'cited because I was born and raised in the Buckeye State -- MIDWEST STRONG! Three up, three down!
So in honor of O-town, please enjoy three classic videos by Ohio's finest musical exports, and feel free to use them on your Road Trip To See Tokio Hotel In Ohio Mix CD: The Pretenders' "Brass In Pocket," (which is all about being reizvoll), Whip It, from everyone's favorite de-evolutionists, Devo, and The Breeders' "Cannonball," which still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I hear that bass line.
Now get to work making those Georg, Gustav and Tom mini wax statues!
