Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.
This new video for Buzzworthy heroes' We The Kings' song, "Heaven Can Wait" -- the first track from their Smile, Kid album -- is clearly a dream sequence. Now, there are no squiggly lines, there's no soft focus, and there's no eerie music. But anyone who's ever either accidentally flipped the channel to the Westminster Dog Show can attest: NOBODY THIS COOL IS EVER AT A DOG SHOW.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there's a whole underground circuit of hipster dog shows, with ironic farmers entering goats into competition and beautiful women watching the proceedings with bated breath. Maybe there's a New York TImes Sunday Styles trend piece on this very thing in the works right now.
But I still think it's a dream sequence.
Watch We The Kings "Heave Can Wait" video, directed by Nicholaus Goossen, who's worked with Adam Sandler and Nick Swardson -- you can hear him on "Gay Robot" (!!)
More MTV "Halloween Horrors" for you. As the hallowed eve approaches, we've been checking with bands like Flyleaf and AFI about their trick or treat memories. Here, Florida band We The Kings set adrift on memory bliss and recall some rough (pumpkin) patches and their issues with Twilight and hot shewolves.
Travis Clark talks about the emotional scars left when a bunch of older kids yoinked his candy. While guitarist Hunter Thomsen bemoans getting saddled with black licorice. I gotta co-sign that; what an abomination of a candy. Disagree? I challenge thee to convince me otherwise in the comments.
Earlier this week, Travis and Hunter of We The Kings told you about their proms -- Travis had a maje faux pas at his prom after he tripped over the electric cord powering up the DJ booth and killed the music (whoopersdoodles!), and Hunter entered a time machine and starred in Back to the Future!
Now, watch this extra-special prom reenactment video (like the ones you see on the TV!) that We The Kings sent to Buzzworthy, and see what happens when Travis goes to prom with a date who looks an AWFUL lot like Danny. Looks like SOMEONE's got a "Secret Valentine!"
We asked We The Kings' Travis and Hunter how their proms went, and while Travis had a major prom faux pas (probably the biggest one next to splitting your pants down the middle), he totally did the right thing and blamed it, Jamie Foxx style.
After the jump, watch Travis and Hunter share their prom memories, and watch Jamie Foxx blame it on everyone and everything.
What do you get when you cross Taylor Hanson with one of the founding members of Smashing Pumpkins? It isn't "Disarm," but it sure ain't "MMMbop" either. The answer is Tinted Windows, the pop-rock outfit formed by the middle Hanson (now a father of four), James Iha, Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger (he also wrote the Jonas Brothers' "I Am What I Am") and Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, who joined Cheap Trick about two decades before Taylor Hanson was born.
If you're expecting Middle of Nowhere Part 2, expect to be disappointed (also, let it go already!) Their debut single, "Kind of a Girl," sounds far more like Fountains of Wayne than a screechy teeny track (thanks to no pint-sized Zac on vox.)
Watch for Tinted Windows' April 21st full-length debut on S-Curve Records (which means they'll be in the same family as We The Kings!) and SXSW performances before that.
Anyway, just in case you're all Team Tokio all the way and need a little break from Unofficial Jonas Week (they DO have a 3D movie AND a new album out this week, so you do understand, right?), let's take a look at WTF Tokio Hotel's been up to recently amidst all the Jonas mania.
+ The guys are STILL putting the finishing touches on their still-delayed next album. Still. As in, still. But apparently the new album will feature 12 new songs, down from 20, which were all recorded between Los Angeles and Germany.
+ Bill and Tom got new Audis! Tom got a grey Audi R8, and Bill's sitting behind the wheel of a white Audi Q7. Yay!
+ But perhaps most astonishing: As of January 2009, Tokio Hotel's "Monsoon" video was the 38th most-watched video on YouTube EVER. Like MORE WATCHED than Michael Jackson's "Thriller." (As of this post, "Monsoon" has 31.8 million views and "Thriller" has jumped to 33.3, causing me to believe that MJ is sitting in a cave somewhere, furiously clicking away. God knows he can't afford to pay people to do it for him.) But MAN do you guys have a lot of time on your hands! Therefore... Might as well watch it again... On MTV.com! ; ) (You know, help me keep my job and stuff!)
I don't wanna shatter any illusions here, but if you're looking to a professional blogger for advice on anything romantic, you have some serious thinking to do. That's why I'm handing this Valentine's Day post off to a pro. John Vesely, aka Secondhand Serenade has more magnetism in one frosted tip than the whole rest of the Internet combined. Can the Internet play piano and sing with its eyes closed? No. It doesn't even have feelings (or eyes). All it can do is make a heart out of a bracket and a three. Weak. John Vesely was born to tell you he loves you. Stick with him. Here's a special Valentine's Day message and a crazy romantic love-playlist from the man himself:
I've always been a lover, not a fighter which is why I love this time of year. And one of my true loves is obviously music. So to come up with a list of long songs/videos is no problem for a guy like me. It's the time of year where you hear songs you may have heard 100 times before, but you suddenly realize they have a special meaning or remind you of someone close to your heart. So hopefully you can take a look at the videos I decided to go with, and let it remind you of whoever may be that certain someone for you.
Earlier this week, the announcement that Hilary Duff will star in a remake of film classic Bonnie & Clyde, ruffled a lot of feathers and raised the argument anew that Hollywood is out of original ideas. The incredibly (i.e. accidentally) timely Mercy Mercedes offer an innovative solution in the form of their video for "The Perfect Scene." In it, the North Carolina pop-punkers borrow heavily from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but instead of ripping off the '80s John Hughes classic line for line, they combine it with elements of other movies, like Back To The Future and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Take note, Hollywood! Instead of boring us with a live-action remake of All Dogs Go To Heaven, why not get out of the box with something more along the lines of 10 Things I Hate About The Fact That I Can't Hardly Wait, or The Breakfast Club At Tiffany's? THINK ABOUT IT. Watch Mercy Mercedes now. Look for them on the Bamboozle Road Show with We The Kings, Forever The Sickest Kids, The Cab and many others in a couple months!
+ Side note: Travis' cocky-cute smile is totally sweeter than those chocolate Valentine's surprise samplers that come in the heart-shaped boxes (ahem) that you get at the drugstore. The ones with the purring kittens or SpongeBob on them. Feel free to tell me what you think -- people, pets, candy, other inanimate objects, etc. -- Travis and WTK are as cute as in the comments...
We know, we know, we're the ones who told you Hey Monday's leading lady looks and sounds a bit like Paramore's Hayley Williams. But guess what: she could do a lot worse. Yes, singer Cassadee Pope has similar highlights -- and high notes -- to the "Misery Business" singer, but the 19-year-old (who's also been calledAvril-y by some) has more important things to deal with than whether or not she kinda, sorta reminds you of someone else.
So quit with the comparisons (again, totally admit to being hypocritical here...) and just appreciate Hey Monday's latest -- the a poptastic smash that is "Homecoming" -- in its own right. Oh, and consider this: Maybe Hayley Williams just sounds like her.
