about this blog

  1. Obsessively blogging about pop music, pop videos, pop stars, and pop culture from inside the MTV headquarters in Times Square. We also have a slight Jonas Brothers problem. And a little fixation with Tokio Hotel.

This week, we're taking a look back at los Artists of the Week quien aren't Américains. So let's revisit some of our most talented foreign friends, non?

Kate Nash: The sometimes-sweet, sometimes-sour British singer-songwriter played plucky piano and extolled the virtues of her favorite baked goods. Meanwhile, several of you applauded yourself for knowing about the British first. Watch Kate Nash's Artist of the Week videos here.

Calle 13: Puerto Rican duo Residente y Visitante got lyrically, metaphorically, bombastically political in their Artist of the Week spots, which were centered around the importance of voting in the 2008 American presidential election. Watch Calle 13's Artist of the Week videos here.

Paddy Casey: The disarmingly soulful Irish singer-songwriter painted broad strokes of Bob Dylan with his hit, "Addicted to Company," and won us over with quirky covers of Outkast and Blackstreet. Watch him warm up a stool in his favorite pub and gain the support of a church choir in his Artist of the Week videos.

Yelle: The quirky, flirty French Tecktonik hip-hop tart engaged in universal boy-issue lament set to hyper computerized blips and beeps and Casio beats. Watch Yelle's Artist of the Week videos here.

Okay, we know what you're thinking: Why would we be heading off the to the red carpet right now if the 2008 Woodie Awards aren't airing til NEXT Wednesday, November 19th? The short answer is, the show's being taped tonight (HOLY CRAP! What are we gonna wear??) which means in a less than an hour, we'll be rubbing elbows with Vampire Weekend, chatting it up with Hayley Williams from Paramore -- that is, assuming she's feeling chatty -- and catching live performances by Santogold and Lykke Li! Wheee!

So wish us luck, and stay tuned for a recap later on this week! Oh, and keep your heads in the game by checking out our fave videos from all five "Left Field Woodies" nominees (that's No Age, Chromeo, Yelle, She and Him and The Cool Kids) ... after the jump.

We're still recovering from that crazy, sleep-deprived time in our lives we like to call the 2008 VMAs (and, more recently, from VH1's Hip Hop Honors bonanza), but that doesn't mean we're not already gearing up for the next big televised awards show. Fortunately, we don't have long to wait, seeing as the mtvU Woodie Awards kick off Wednesday, November 19th.

And whether you're a sorority girl (like Elle Woods!) a pre-frosh (like Serena and Blair!) or someone who religiously watches Hannah Montana, we have a feeling you're not gonna want to miss THE definitive college awards show (where all the nominees are chosen by poor, ramen-noodle-eating university types!) And since the polls are officially open from now through November 7th, here's a painstakingly complete list of the categories and nominees. You're welcome!

+ Lil Wayne, Paramore, Tokyo Police Club, MGMT and Santogold duke it out for Woodie of the Year. Note that as much as we would love to see the nominees breakdance fight, the winner for this category (and all subsequent categories) will be chosen solely on the basis of your votes.

+ We love charity. Just today, we selflessly scarfed down three oatmeal raisin cookies (purchased from a Breast Cancer Bake Sale!) all in the name of good health -- and late-afternoon sugar rushes. Now, cheer on your fave do-gooders as Eddie Vedder, Ludacris, Jack's Mannequin, Mary J. Blige and Emmanuel Jal fight for the right to take home the Good Woodie.

+ Ever heard that song "Video Killed the Radio Star?" Yeah, that's a bunch of bull. So hit the polls to see Adele and Motion City Soundtrack take on heavy hitters like Gnarls Barkley, Vampire Weekend and Erykah Badu for the Best Video Woodie.

+ We've always had a secret soft spot for the New Kid. So we'll definitely be checking back to find out which of these rookies (All Time Low, We The Kings, There For Tomorrow, Lykke Li and Tyga) is gonna walk out of here with the title of Breaking Woodie.

+ You know those amazing can't-live-without artists you never heard of 'til, like, yesterday? Well, you still have three more weeks to choose between No Age, Chromeo, Yelle, She and Him and The Cool Kids for Left Field Woodie.

+ And you gotta give it up for the performers who ALWAYS know how to put on a good show. Or as we like to call them, "the Michael Jordans of music." Yeah, we're talkin' about you, Kanye West, Atmosphere, N.E.R.D., The Ting Tings and Simian Mobile Disco. May the best one win! A Performance Woodie, that is.

****Psssst! Not only can you vote for your favorite artists -- you can also campaign for them on your Facebook/MySpace pages(!!) For more details about voting, campaigning and general Woodie goodness, go to mtvU's official Woodies Awards site. GO WOOD!

Parlez-vous francais? Sadly, the answer is still no. But we used our powers of deduction (read: Google search engine) to determine that "Je veux te voir" is French for "I want to see you." And as Yelle proves in her latest "Pop-Up" video, nothing communicates a sense of urgency quite like a prolonged/scantily clad workout montage. Meanwhile, despite not understanding a word, we feel confident that we still got the gist of the song. That is, assuming the electro pop tart -- and former Artist of the Week -- was, in fact, channeling Olivia Newton John in "Physical" while paying homage to the "style" (slutty gym-clothes chic) made famous by American Apparel.

Alright, fine. We don't know whether Yelle is singing about smelly gym socks, crappy ex-boyfriends or the war in Iraq -- and we're not sure we even care. Either way, we dig it. Just one question, though: Does watching this count as our daily cardio?

+ Check out Yelle perform "Je Veux Te Voir" live on MTV and then click here to find out what the song is actually about. (Hint: It's not Iraq!)

How and why are you not watching this video? At SXSW this year, the Tings Tings were the biggest thing since barbecue. The British electro-dance duo are a mash-up of the Go! Team, CSS and Yelle. Plus, Blondie-alike Katie sorta looks like Hayley Williams' big sister, Jules reminds us of James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, for some reason, and the beginning of the song sounds like Eddie Money's "Baby Hold On." Because it does. They write a genuinely great band blog, and they had their fans call up and leave their names on an answering machine, and the results are gonna end up on their "That's My Name?" B-side. Cuters!

Anyway, watch "Great DJ," and read the Ting Tings' mtvU.com interview here. Their album, We Started Nothing, comes out in May.

Yelle (the last "e" is silent) is not just another hipster chick in leg warmers and lamé (even though she's partial both). The French electro hip-pop tart's got the blogosphere appropriately atwitter over her spazzy live performances, aerobics-inspired videos and intentionally low-budget (think cable-access) '80s steez, despite the fact that she hasn't even released an album in the States yet.

When, like us, you don't speak French, Yelle -- think Lily Allen's snark meets M.I.A.'s wardrobe meets Nelly Furtado's flirt factor -- who's got the makings of a modern-day European Blondie, sounds like she's just engaging in universal boy-issue lament set to hyper computerized blips and beeps and Casio beats.

But beneath the retro patina and language barrier lay raunchy, NC-17 lyrics about matters of… "size," (zut alors!), sex toys, and girl-on-girl action, coated with a sweet gloss of poppy saccharine.

This just in on our end: French Tecktonik-poplet Yelle's 'A Cause Des Garcons' video! It's adorably bright, and while vosotros no parlez French bien, we think it loosely translates to "Because of boys."

The song's actually a cover -- the original is by a 1980s French pop band who also called themselves "A Caus' Des Garcons," which is definitely confusing.
